For Italian micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), 2026 marks the year of technological and environmental maturity. Today, staying competitive is no longer just about your product or service: a company’s efficiency is measured by its ability to manage the digitalisation of its processes and to reduce the impact of its energy consumption.

This evolutionary path, known as the “Twin Transition”, requires targeted investment but benefits from an extraordinary ally: the non-repayable grants allocated by the Digital Business Points (PID) of the Chambers of Commerce.

Many business owners, however, associate the word “grant” with an impenetrable bureaucratic swamp and end up missing out on valuable funds. In this article we’ll clear things up, looking in detail at what the 2026 Twin Transition Grant actually funds and how to set up a project that can make it through the selection process.

The two pillars of the Twin Transition: what can you fund?

The scheme does not support one-off or random purchases (such as simply replacing a company smartphone). Instead, it rewards coherent development projects that combine technological innovation and sustainability.

Eligible investments fall into two broad strategic areas.

1. Digital transition (Digital 4.0 and 5.0)

This section funds the introduction of the enabling technologies a company needs to optimise workflows, protect its information assets and strengthen its market presence. Eligible solutions include:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Big Data: Predictive analytics systems and automation of decision-making processes.
  • Cybersecurity and Cloud Computing: Solutions to secure company data and migrate systems to protected cloud infrastructure.
  • Integrated ERP and CRM systems: Software for unified management of company resources, invoicing and customer relationships.
  • E-commerce and advanced digital marketing: Online sales platforms linked to inventory systems, and marketing automation tools.
  • IoT and collaborative robotics: Sensors for industrial monitoring and smart machinery to optimise production.

2. Ecological transition (Sustainability and energy)

This funding line is designed to cut energy bills and guide the company towards circular economy models. Eligible activities include:

  • Specialist energy audits: Systematic analysis of a company’s energy flows to identify waste and define tailored efficiency plans.
  • Energy management: Hardware and software systems for real-time monitoring of electricity, gas and water consumption.
  • Consulting for Renewable Energy Communities (CER): Feasibility studies and planning for joining or setting up a CER, encouraging self-generation from renewable sources.
  • Circular Economy Plans: Projects to reduce the use of raw materials, add value to company waste and reduce the carbon footprint.

Eligible types of expenditure: consulting, training and equipment

For each project submitted, the Bando Doppia Transizione 2026 covers three closely linked levels of expenditure:

  • Specialist consulting: Support from qualified professionals, such as Innovation Managers listed in the ministerial registers, who are essential for guiding the implementation of technologies without making strategic positioning mistakes.
  • Staff training: Courses and coaching programmes designed to give employees the skills they need to make the most of new digital tools or manage new energy-efficiency routines.
  • Purchase of capital goods: Software licences, cloud service fees, hardware devices and measuring instruments directly linked to the project.

The crux of the matter: timing and formal compliance

Twin Transition vouchers are almost everywhere allocated through a first-come, first-served procedure (the so-called Click Day). This means that the funds, however substantial, tend to run out within minutes of the online platforms opening.

In this context, improvisation is a business owner’s worst enemy. A single incorrectly completed attachment, a quote that doesn’t meet the Chamber’s strict guidelines, or the lack of the mandatory digital maturity test (SELFI 4.0) to be completed on the PID portal will lead to the application being rejected immediately.
